Phototoxicity results from a combination of chemical compounds found in certain plants called furanocoumarins forming complexes with DNA when exposed with UVA light. These can then lead to an inflammatory response resulting in hyperpigmentation.
All the essential oils that contain furanocoumarins (bergamot, lemon, lime, etc.) are at low enough levels in our products to not be considered phototoxic. Even by combining the percentages of all potentially phototoxic ingredients, they are still at a safe level to use before spending time in the sun.
